Summer Hazards For Your Pets

Diet isn’t the only ‘minefield’ to navigate to keep your dog healthy. In summer there are added dangers which can affect your dog or cat.

Keep your pets hydrated, make sure cool fresh water is available in different locations around the garden. Dogs drink more in summer than in any other season.

Provide shelter in a shady place for your dog and cost to retreat to in hot weather. Short muzzled breeds cannot tolerate hot & humid weather so take them inside.

Exercise should be limited to the coolest parts of the day. Keep the walks short and take them out early in the morning or in the evening.

Fertilizers and lawn treatments can be toxic. Many of these chemicals are deadly to dogs, especially puppies and small breeds, older dogs or those in poor health.

Toxic plants should be avoided or only planted in areas where the dog doesn’t have access.

When having a summer barbeque, keep dogs away from hot grills during and after its use until it has cooled down.

Grill utensils such as knives and skewers, charcoal and lighter fluid should also be kept well out the dogs reach.

NEVER leave your dog in a parked car. Less than 20 minutes in a parked car on a warm day can prove fatal to dogs.
